War Song

Trns. by John Balcom

Who is it that singing in broad daylight
Singing a song of war, radical and resounding
Drums thunder, biting the high-rises amid the clouds
Sending them down, tumbling from the blue sky
Striking up brightness, brilliance, and blooming blazes
Painting a battling breast the blood red of roses
Burning tearful eyes, dry and agonized
Seizing black smoke, coldness, and gray mud
An avalanche of enmity from the bright and beautiful sky
Does its best to cleanse the streets, their faces covered

Gunfire bursts, mocking life’s transience
A hail of bullets plays a requiem on a tile roof
Guns lift the soldiers’ powerful shoulders
Blood tills the farmers’ neglected fields
Barren nations sing out with joyful cannonades
Hungry refugees feast on banquets of dust and sand
Happiness springs from eternal hope
Someone chants quietly amid the ruins
War must always end in death
And peace must com as night falls
